The INVITATION OF THE INEFFABLE
An opportunity to experience all the magic, mystery and rich cultural attractions of Bali, Indonesia’s fabulous “Island of 1000 Temples,” for centuries one of the world’s most fascinating spiritual centers. With Jane, we are guided by brothers, Sam and Matt George, who together have spent over 40 years under the sway of this exotic island and its people (Matt in residence since 2005.)
Bali Heart and Soul, in conjunction with Jane’s Dancing Hands, steps off the conventional tourist trail to share more authentic interactions with the mystical sights, sounds and flavors of the place the Balinese call “The Morning of the Earth”.
“As a professional surfer, journalist and filmmaker, I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world in search of barefoot adventure, yet have been asked many times what has kept me coming back to the island of
Bali time and time again. The answer is simple: nowhere else on earth have I experienced a place, a people, and a culture where spirituality and hospitality are so seamlessly integrated into everyday life…
and so joyfully shared.” ~ Sam George
The Experience…
Based out of a private Balinese villa in the island’s fabled Ubud region, a select group of voyagers will enjoy an itinerary that thoughtfully blends tranquility with activity, assuring that each, to their own taste, will experience all that a stay on Bali has to offer.
Having first visited the island in 1984, Sam and Matt will be drawing on friendships and relationships that have spanned decades, enlisting various artists, pemangkus (priests), temple guides and village leaders—both women and men—to help provide a local’s perspective throughout the days and nights spent both in the peaceful villa setting and on a number of exciting excursions.
In short, a chance to experience Bali alongside a team who, more than merely accommodating tourists on a more typical program, sincerely look forward to sharing their love of this truly remarkable place and culture.
The Setting…
Our base of experience will be in and around the village of Ubud, the longstanding cultural heart of Bali. Located in the lush hills and cool forests of the island’s ‘midlands’, Ubud was first settled in the 8th century by a nomadic Hindu priest named Rsi Markandaya, who, with 200 followers in train, stumbled across an enchanting spot at the confluence of two rivers flowing down from distant misty highlands. Here a temple was eventually built to honor Dewi Danu, Goddess of the Lakes. During construction of the temple, however, Markandaya’s people discovered myriad medicinal herbs and plants, and it was because of this wealth of healing botanicals that the area originally became known as Ubad, the Balinese word for medicine.
As in many other regions of Bali, the centuries since have seen much changed in Ubud, today one of the island’s most popular destinations. And yet, for so long steeped in the healing arts, spirituality and rich Balinese culture, Ubud still retains much of its essence as a haven for both seekers and artists. With its blend of verdant forested hills, lush rice paddies, tranquil settings, historical destinations and traditional markets blending pleasingly with contemporary local cafes, restaurants and shops, Ubud is the ideal spot to center oneself in the magical world of Bali.
The Itinerary
Upon transit from Bali’s Nguru Rai International Airport to our private villa in Ubud, providing double or single occupancy, air-conditioned bedrooms (according to preference), you will be welcomed by Jane, Sam, and Matt and invited to tap into your post travel needs. Some light food and refreshment, a good nap? Your Day One is to arrive, recover, rest, and acclimate.
Once you’ve settled in, you’ll be able to enjoy a wide range of amenities including daily Balinese breakfast or snacks, the swimming pool, meditation or walks in the garden pavilions, plus time for relaxation.
Once we have our group, we’ll create schedules for JANE’s Dancing Hands Circles, Sam and Matt’s creative writing classes, (with guidance for more soulful photography and documentation of your experience for longtime writers and/or new journalists alike), and more, based around flow time, luxuriating on the villa grounds, and experiencing all the attractions the Ubud region has to offer.
Several excursions set further afield, assuring voyagers the entire scope of the Bali experience. With the flexible itineraries currently being explored, as with all JANE’s Dancing Hands Retreats, we will enjoy an immersive and inspired experience in the most wondrous places, sure to delight us all. Yes, there will be time for Balinese massage and surf or stand-up board lessons, if one wishes, as well as exploring the work of the local artisans, and time to reflect in ways we’ve not yet had in previous JANE’s Dancing Hands Retreats. Blending with Sam and Matt’s remarkable gifts of storytelling and love for all the most beautiful ways we can experience life, this is sure to be one of our most moving, and timely retreats yet.
“This was one of the best times of my life…Under the instruction of Matt George – former professional surfer and now editor-in-chief of Surftime Magazine … (we) embarked on two unforgettable weeks in Bali… It was experiential learning – the kind that everyone should seek. Instead of reading about volcanoes, we climbed them. Rather than studying the Hindu Full Moon Ceremony, we knelt with locals at the temple, clad in sarongs.” ~former student of Matt George
Retreat Logistics
A typical day could include a tranquil morning, followed by breakfast and yoga. **In past events, we’ve asked for each participant to be at a medium level of physical strength. As far as I know, we won’t be swimming with the whales as we did each day in Tonga, (it’s not on the agenda), or hiking up Machu Picchu in high altitude as we did in Peru, but we’d still love for your to check in with us if you are having any restrictions with your physical or emotional strength and balance. Let’s talk in transparency about where we are and what you may need. Some, but not all may wish to learn to surf. Obviously, if you’re not a swimmer, we’d say you could sit on the beach for that.
Excursions
To be spaced throughout the Bali Heart and Soul experience, as per time and inclination.
A full-day trip to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, home of the spectacular, cliffside Ulu Watu temple. Includes a mid-morning visit to Padang-Padang, one of the island’s most picturesque beaches, followed by a temple tour led by Wayan Lukarni, a longtime friend of the Georges, and one of Bali’s first female surfers. She will then act as our personal guide and interpreter at an absolutely spellbinding kecak trance dance, performed on the temple grounds, followed by dinner at nearby Chempaka, the warung, or Balinese café, she owns and runs.
An overnight trip into Bali’s highlands, staying at the Lakeview Hotel, perched high on the wall of an ancient volcanic caldera, overlooking the sacred Lake Batur. Led by Made II, voyagers will enjoy two easy-to-moderate hikes, one to a temple dedicated to the towering Mt. Batur, followed by another to the temple Pura Ulun Danu Batur, one of the island’s two most important water temples, there to participate in a simple purification ceremony. Lunch will be served by Made and his wife Wayan in their family home on the shores of the lake.
A day trip to the famous beach at Kuta, the Waikiki of Bali, where those inclined can take surfing lessons from Sam and Matt aided by some of Bali’s most renowned surf instructors, or simply just lay in the sun and watch the cavalcade of characters pass by. Followed by a glorious communal seafood dinner on the sands of Jimbaran Bay, vantage point for Bali’s most spectacular sunsets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is solo accommodation an option?
Yes! The private villa we have selected offers both single and double occupancy, so you can sleep solo or slumber party as you choose.
What sort of food will be served?
We will be eating traditional meals prepared with local, fresh ingredients. Please note that many Westerners often experience an upset to their gut biome as they adjust to the food and drinks here, and prepare in advance accordingly. (We’ve heard people have had success with incorporating activated charcoal into their diet ahead of travelling, and would recommend avoiding water that’s not bottled, ice, and blended drinks to be on the safe side.)
I've never danced with JANE before. What can I expect?
Jane’s Dancing Hands Circles are not static lessons, or still meditations, but as Jane begins, the connection with the sacred Pura Vida elementals and Source Energy through Joyfully, Activating, Nurturing, Energy, flows like a spring from within. Encouragement is given and more, all are invited to enjoy a full mind, body, spirit, and emotional immersion into all that can be for each of us.
For Those who already enjoy Ecstatic dance, Trance dance, Nia, or 5 Rhythms, this may be a natural entry point for you to deepen your practice. Those who enjoy these New Circles and don’t already enjoy the above-mentioned dances, you are heartily encouraged to seek out communities who move together for love, light, and the highest sacred connection. These tribes have the full rainbow of experience and when we add in the healing elements of intention for “best and highest good” more can thrive in their fullest expression as Source moves through us all.
Do I have to dance?
One doesn’t need to dance to attend, but many are moved to dance with pure Source/God/Creator/All-That-Is when Jane opens her heart and hands in service to the best and highest good for each participant and the group as a whole.
